Scythe Mugen Max High Performance Quiet CPU Cooler, SCMGD-1000

Scythe’s extremely popular Mugen series has just received its newest incarnation. The Mugen Max now offers better performance and easier installation.

For enthusiasts and Mugen fans alike, Scythe is “setting free” the Mugen MAX. Another contender for the “XL” CPU tower cooler market, the Mugen MAX is a real eye-catcher. For performance, a GlideStream 140mm PWM fan takes care of blowing out the warm air through the T-M.A.P.S. (Three-dimensional Multiple Airflow Pass-through Structure) which you might recognise from Scythe’s flagship, the Mugen 4. For easy installation, the mounting system also is borrowed from its smaller brother! Nickel-plated heatpipes add a classy touch to this impressive cooler.

Features

  1. Greater performance and easier installation
  2. Supplied with a GlideStream 140mm PWM fan
  3. Total of six U-shaped heatpipes
  4. Features TMAPS for better airflow and performance
  5. Extremely quiet, from only 13.0 dBA
  6. Compatible with Intel and AMD

T-M.A.P.S. (Three-dimensional Multiple Airflow Pass-through Structure)

The huge heatsink with increased spacing of the heat fins to 2.6 mm, the Mugen MAX offers reduced windage and optimised performance in the lower speed range of the supplied 140mm PWM fan.

User-friendly Installation

The mounting system already seen in the Mugen 4 can be found again here - the proven H.P.M.S (Hyper Precision Mounting System) makes easy mounting possible - requiring fewer work steps on the way. This brilliant concept allows the Mugen MAX to be fitted without having to demount the motherboard.

Maximum Compatibility

The asymmetrical assembly of the base plate provides comfortable clearance to the memory banks on the main board. Installing memory modules fitted with extremely high heatsinks (and replacing them) is usually possible without having to remove either the fan or the heatsink. (Depending on the layout, this may not be applicable to all eight memory banks for LGA 2011 mainboards)

Multi Fan Mount Structure

Inheriting the concept of the Mugen 4, the design of the MAX also allows variable fan placement to optimise a targeted airflow. To furthermore enhance cooling performance, a second fan can be mounted with the supplied pair of fan clips.

140 mm GildeStream Fan

Accompanying the Mugen MAX is a fan from the popular GlideStream family, known for impressive results from other Scythe products. Compared to a 120 mm fan, the higher efficiency at identical speed results in similar air discharge whilst creating much less noise.

Review

  • Silent PC Review

The Mugen Max offers excellent cooling proficiency, and in fact is the most effective asymmetric heatsink we’ve tested with a single fan. Physically, it’s shorter than most tower coolers and has a lopsided design, giving it an edge in compatibility against much of the competition. Additionally, the fan is strong performer with above average acoustics.

Excellent Cooler

,

Having been driven crazy by noisy fans I bought this cooler. It is very well engineered and in many ways is ‘just right’ I installed mine as a retrofit so the mother board was already screwed in. A few points to note: This is one big cooler like the size of a lawnmower engine and it just cleared other components and the lid. For this reason there is not much room to get fingers in around it. It is not altogether clear from the instructions what the orientation should be. Basically the fan should end up on the same side as the memory. Make sure you don’t muddle the pillars. There are various fixings provided for AMD and Intel. Also one of the Intel options needs another set of washers. Remove the stuff you don’t need before you start to avoid potential confusion. One side of the heat sink overhangs the fixing plate so is only accessible from the top via a 6mm hole in the cooler or from the side. If you are fitting the cooler before the motherboard is fitted in the case then the provided spanner might do the job. However if you are retrofitting to a board already in the case then no chance. A standard PZ1 screw driver is too short to reach the screw. Fitting required an excursion to B and Q to buy a long reach PZ1. Unfortunately this only came as part of a set of 4 450mm long. C’est la vie!. This came magnetised and fitting and removal was very straightforward once you have the right tool. It is very well engineered. Every hole is in exactly the right place so with the right tool it goes together like a dream.
